Dance enthusiasts across Spain are in for a treat this week, with major events in both Olivenza and Madrid showcasing the passion of Latin rhythms and the raw intensity of flamenco. From a weekend-long festival in Extremadura featuring a European music star to captivating flamenco performances in the nation’s capital, the cultural calendar is packed with world-class talent.
Olivenza to Host Epic Latin Dance Weekend
The city of Olivenza is set to become the epicenter of Latin music and dance with two major events scheduled at the Municipal Auditorium.
The excitement kicks off on Friday, August 29th, at 10:30 PM, with a performance by the internationally acclaimed artist Dani J. Widely regarded as the number one bachata artist in Europe, this concert will mark his first-ever appearance in the Extremadura region. Tickets are currently on sale for €12 at several local outlets in Olivenza, including Tienda Nueva, Papelería Rosi, Saudade, Reme’s Belleza y Complementos, and Verónica Cordero Boutique de Belleza.
The celebration continues on Saturday, August 30th, with the 17th Annual “AlSon” Dance Festival, beginning at 10:00 PM at the same venue. The festival will feature numerous dance couples and companies, who will delight audiences with spectacular performances of salsa, bachata, and other Latin rhythms. The entrance fee is a €3.50 donation.
For those looking for a more immersive experience, a full pass is available for €25, which includes dance workshops, shows, and access to the social dance floor. Alternatively, a social-only ticket can be purchased for €8, which includes one mixed drink or two soft drinks/beers. The music for the evening’s festivities will be provided by DJ Cisco, ensuring a high-energy conclusion to the night.
These events are organized by the Alson Oliventina Dance Association with the support of the Olivenza City Council. They are part of the “El Verano de tu Vila” cultural program, sponsored by the Badajoz Provincial Council.
Acclaimed Flamenco Dancer Noelia Ruiz Performs in Madrid
Meanwhile, in Madrid, audiences can find a cultural escape from the summer heat with a special performance by celebrated flamenco dancer Noelia Ruiz. As part of the “Refúgiate en la Cultura” (Shelter in Culture) series, Ruiz will showcase the best of her flamenco art on Wednesday, August 27th, at two of the city’s most prestigious museums:
- 3:00 PM at the Museum of History of Madrid (c/ Fuencarral, 78)
- 5:00 PM at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum (Paseo del Prado, 8)
Born in Málaga in 1997, Noelia Ruiz has built a solid artistic and academic career. Beginning her training at just three years old, she pursued professional studies at the Pepa Flores Conservatory, earned a Superior Degree in Flamenco Dance Pedagogy in Madrid, and holds a Master’s in Cultural Management. Ruiz has trained with some of the biggest names in flamenco and has been a member of the National Ballet of Spain since 2019. Her impressive resume includes work with the Enrique Vicent and Antonio Canales companies and performances in major Madrid tablaos. Her talent has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Extraordinary Award from the Government of Andalusia and the National Award for Education in Dance.
