Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man Takes Carmen To The Movies

“Trailer: Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man – New Adventures”

New Adventures and Sadler’s Wells present a restaging of The Car Man which is said to be “loosely based” on Bizet’s opera Carmen.

However it immediately struck me as a very American tale that evokes scenes from the movies which, as it turns out, is also the case.

In the below interview choreographer Mathew Bourne discusses the problems with yet another staging of Carmen and his decision to stage a thriller rather than telling the original story.

He also discusses a variety of connections to film scores and characters as well as the choice of an American setting.
