Keshet’s 19th Annual Nutcracker on the Rocks

In Keshet Dance Company’s 19th Annual Nutcracker on the Rocks, traditional meets contemporary for an exciting and magical holiday event. Opening with Tchaikovsky’s Overture and closing with his dramatic Pas de Deux, the classic tale is re-imagined with a production filled with rock and roll hits by the Velvet Underground, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and many more. Modern dance styles infused with Swing, Hip Hop, African dance propel the performers as they amp up the energy and excitement. For the first time ever, this production will be presented at the Keshet Center for the Arts, with new surprises for long-time audience members and fun for the entire family!

This year Nutcracker on the Rocks moves to a new theatre, the Keshet Center for the Arts, bringing the long-standing Albuquerque tradition to Keshet’s own home for the first time in 19 years. With this move, Keshet is able to expand the run of the production over two weekends, make exciting changes to the set and costumes, and add long-awaited elements to the production such as audience interaction and a special performance each weekend (Sundays at 6:30) specifically designed to be performed for individuals with Autism and their families and friends. These “Autism-friendly” performances have altered technical elements, smaller audience sizes, and break-out spaces for individuals to get up and move around throughout the performance.

Nutcracker on the Rocks was created in Albuquerque 19 years ago and combines professional dancers with community dancers of all ages and abilities with many dancers performing from their wheelchairs along-side their able-bodied peers. 2015 also marks the third year in which the show is being produced in Helena, Montana through Cohesion Dance Project, which secured the rights to Shira Greenberg’s trademarked re-creation of the holiday classic in 2013 and has been performing it annually over Thanksgiving weekend at the Helena Civic Center, using Keshet current staff and alumni as principal cast members and rehearsal directors. Artistic Director of Cohesion Dance Project, Tanya Call, is a former Keshet company member who performed in the Albuquerque production for five years. Call says “Nutcracker on the Rocks is a fabulous way to bring the dance community together, and a true picture of the scope and power that dance can have in transforming lives through movement and collaboration.”

Greenberg created Nutcracker on the Rocks nineteen years ago with 13 dancers. “My vision was to create a modern classic out of the traditional gem. I chose rock and roll music and incorporated a range of dance styles to infuse the production with a fresh, high-energy feeling that would engage audiences of all ages,” says Greenberg. Today, the acclaimed production is made up of over 140 dancers and is enjoyed by over 4,000 people each year.
