Dancing Shadow Sculptures Seem Simple But There’s Trickery At Work

“Parade – Dancing Shadow Sculptures”

Parade is an interesting sculptural artwork both for what it seems to be and for what it is.

Ostensibly people swing the light and the shadows dance. It’s an enjoyably simple piece and the video above gives a sense of what people can do with it.

It would be interesting to use this artwork to create an animation except that the moving shadows are not what we assume.

According to Christopher Jobson at This Is Colossal:

“Dpt. explains further that the animated ‘shadows’ are coming from a hidden projector which tracks the movements of the faux light source. We’ve been tricked! But I suppose that’s kind of the point.”
